splyt
An app designed to split the bill, tackling the social headaches that often arise when paying in groups.

the problems
The main insipiration for the development of Novus came from the problems found in the Xbox One and Playstation 4’s UI.
😳 Social Awkwardness in Restaurants
A solution was needed to remove the awkwardness of dividing bills between people.
Dining out with friends can sometimes lead to disagreements about who's paying. While people often intend to split the bill later using bank transfers, it doesn't always happen, leaving some people out of pocket.
Console users prefer quick access to their games, but Xbox's system was cluttered with ads and non-gaming content, frustrating many players.
📱 Fiddling with Calculators
The process of calculating individual costs after a meal can be time-consuming and tedious.
Our app takes the hassle out of splitting bills by automatically calculating individual costs.
🤦🏻♂️ People are Forgetful
People often forget how much they spend when they're at restaurants or at events.
Sometimes it's difficult to remember if you've paid someone back, especially when dealing with multiple people.

measuring success
We hope this concept would end the days of people pulling out calculators and loose change. Instead, Splyt would do all the work for you.
We also hope that the concept would enable people to keep track on their spendings and also act as a receipt on settled payments. There should be no need for any awkward conversations on who will be paying what and how it will be paid.

drawing the concept
This visualisation helped me map out the user journey, providing a clear picture of how they would interact with the product. It also highlighted the essential features and functionalities that would need to be included for a successful end product.

design choices
👉 Navigation Bar
Fitts' Law: We utilise Fitts' Law in our design by considering the size and location of buttons. Larger buttons, like the "Start Split" button, are designed with a larger clickable area to facilitate faster and easier user interaction, leading to a smoother user experience (UX).
Serial-Position Effect: We leverage the serial-position effect in the navigation bar design. The placement of buttons is intentionally chosen to improve memorability, allowing users to easily recall their locations.

👉 Aesthetic-Usability
The transition from the dashboard to the final split screen has been meticulously designed to be both visually appealing and user-friendly. This aligns with the principle of aesthetic-usability, which suggests that users often perceive a well-designed UI as inherently more usable.
Feedback from our users revealed that the 2017 dashboard lacked visual appeal and felt outdated. This negatively impacted initial user engagement, as many were hesitant to use the app.
Our new design addresses these concerns by prioritising a visually pleasing and intuitive experience. This shift aims to create a more inviting and enjoyable user experience, encouraging greater engagement and adoption of the app.

👉 Skeuomorphic Design
2020 has seen a resurgence of skeuomorphic design, a trend that involves mimicking real-world objects in digital interfaces.
This is evident in elements like the on-screen receipt and other imagery within the app.
The "slide to send request" feature on the final screen further exemplifies this approach, drawing inspiration from the physical act of sliding a physical card to complete a transaction..

👉 Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The future of better UX is making use of technologies. Artificial Intelligence being one of them.
Using the phone's in built camera, an AI scans the receipt and extracts the key information. The AI will automatically calculate the final price, which is used as the total to be split amongst the group.
